Sifter
02:07
|
|||
The last few hours.
Came and went
I needed you
Days becoming nights
This place is cold
Forget it. I feel fine
Watching it keep repeating
Knowing that this is not the end
Somebody help me
Somebody change me
Somebody sift thru that static
That goes thru me
She keeps wearing
Violence on her sleeves.
It echoes
Bracing for something real
Tangible. Where she can find some sleep
Somebody help her
Somebody change her
Somebody sift thru the shit
That rages through her

Tapes and Such
04:27
|

Thinking of walking
Right out the kitchen
Right back on the patio
Needs some time to think
Get a call from an old friend
What a story to tell you
Sounds like it unraveled for them
Does her best to wish them well
Retreats back inside on the couch
Find out what's on basic cable
Why are cooking shows on this late?
So it's another romantic comedy
That she never wanted to see
There’s something to the unknown
Like what’s on the stereo
In coffee shops, novelty stores,
ER waiting rooms, and record shops
She’s staying away from the prodigal friends
Gets too political with stilted views, life advice,
and their tapes and such
Not been so stressful
Someone’s feeling better aren’t you?
Despite the dramatics
Left them at the door
Turned it to 'alarms only'
Cell finally stopped ringing
We’ll see you around 11
It's another Friday night in
We've seen this movie a hundred times
But we still don’t know how it ends

Shaken

hold on for you
said you look shaken
wanted something comfortable
wanted something familiar
hold on for me
just speaking's been difficult
because he's too busy trying to keep it inside
but it's all he remembers
all she wants is to get involved
with forgetting if she’s getting home
the streets and alleys are keeping her guessing
at something she’s just somehow missing
stayin later for after hours
these nights grow too long to remember
hold on for you
because you're asleep by 11:30
thought you might still want to hear from him
thought you might still want to know
hold on for me
whats the point of the memories
whats the point of the missing feelings
the wasted times that we could have had
[Lyrics from "Don't Let Me Explode" as recorded by The Hold Steady]

Ghostly
03:53
|
|||
If her memory servers her
These nights will get shorter
As they always seem to be
These hands that she’s holding
Might always seem broken
She knows things will turn out all right
Puts on her makeup
Conceals the foundation
Mascara lines hold back her thoughts
Self-consciously wondering
if everyone’s noticing
That these two have turned a bit ghostly
They’re happy to be here
They love what they’ve done with the place
But the paint keeps peeling
The pictures falling off of the walls
They’re happy to be here
They love what they’ve done with the time and the space
The floor joists are warping
They're always making cracks in the floor
Has trouble sleeping
Her mind keeps on running
Calms herself down. Falls to sleep
These hands that she’s holding
Might always seem broken
She knows things will turn out all right
Fall turns to winter.
Spring back to summer
Watch all those years in a day
These highways they drive down
The exits they bypass
They all seem to lead her back home

Chlorine
03:43
|
|||
I am sponge. I am filthy
Soak it all up. Let it all in
Everything that floats by
Everything that rubs past
I am wrecked. Better discarded.
Left for good in the chlorine
The drain following me
Swallows the things I discarded
Some pieces still remain
Can't follow the things that i left behind
There were regrets but our future feels never written
But I'm too drunk, yeah,
I’m too far gone to sing it
We're spent. We're useless
Spent the whole night just trying to forget
Medicines on the counter.
Helps the moments float by
Yeah we're wrecked. Better discarded
Left for good in the chlorine

Hazy Third
03:50
|
|||
It’s a swifter pause
Right between her thoughts.
Will the morning still feel the same?
Ignore that sentiment
Before it’s all you think
The music has got me lost
Out in the winter’s cold
The rhythm keeps us moving on
A hazy third’s come over me
she says everything will be alright
chemistries start mixing
she makes the lights start dimming
only hours until the alarm
the window still drenched in the street light
They both lie awake
Neither wants this hazy third to end
See your jackets loose
Notice your buttons torn
Take me up the stairs
to where you will
its our time to leave
the rest behind
forget it all for now
let the pace ease your mind

Intertwined
03:16
|
|||
Starts getting heavy. Not the gravity
Its the moments we’re indulging
something to this. somethings right
notice the way she only breathes in this dim light
know her eyes. know her hair
Notice the way she runs her fingers everywhere
Want to feel you all intertwined
Not much talking. That’s no surprise
Okay to live with this. This is ours
The pace we keep is growing louder against the walls
play a character. convince them so
secrets kept. best they won’t know
what we do here. keep the rhythm
of your hips in synch. your breathing quickens
feel the rush of blood. synapse closing
it's what we’re here for; til neither is moving

too hard to keep lying as such
she keeps coming down on herself too much
she knows she loses only four or five months in a minute
sometimes the weather blows over before she has a chance to notice
dreaming too much about an old connection
she keeps complaining about her life's direction
the things she felt in her veins, they're going all astray
still i listen for the words i know aren't coming
her endless summer's over somehow
she comes back to me looking for an answer
that i can't give her with my life tangled in knots
she'll say its right, as long as she can until its damaging her reputation
for knowing its never black or white.
its just her and i and a tendency to stay the night
maintain a stoic composure
so she knows the feeling's no closer
to anything she wanted it to be for her
it's costly growing numb to the ones you have to keep
so i keep running ever closer to empty.
the years to date have been fucking exhausting
so i lay down, wishing she would just reconsider
with the remnants of her perfume always still sticking to the mattress

Strings
02:59
|
|||
Just a little unsure
So I Better take it back
Back from here
Without these strings
Not much to say
I can be bleak
I'm feeling just a little bit worn in
Time's inching towards it
It's another year
And I still hope
Your time stood still
We keep drifting
Oceans between us
There's an ebb and flow
But your mind was here
And so it goes. And so it goes.
One more time
Noticed the difference
Within your eyes
Something disappears
Can I just hope for
What's come to pass
Just for one more night?

Feel Easy
04:35
|
|||
t's too hard feeling famous
getting too far from normal
with the time slipping by
drinks rest on the table
swallow it. i'll get there
burns on the way down
the taste is changing for certain
its feeling all too familiar
shut the door on your way out
the years are catching up to me
yeah it gets a bit heavy
just to look in the mirror
to see what you've gotten used to
just to make feel it easy
the glasses empty, defeated
the veins keeping him going
medicine works its way in
now she swears she'll be over
though he won't understand it
their chemistries mixing softly
so now it bears some repeating
she shuts her eyes, holds her breath in
just to see if it's still there
